Survived - if not entirely enjoyed - another long weekend field hockey tournament. I enjoyed the parts that I was there for, but I had to take off after my games yesterday and today to throw myself into the madness that is the development department right now, and thus missed valuable beer garden time.
( Don't get sucked into the crazy )
I hope my Canadian friends had a good Victoria Day long weekend, and I wish my American friends a fantastic Memorial Day long weekend!
I have two Dreamwidth invite codes if anybody wants one. Eventually I'll sort myself out over there...

I turned on my iPod for my walk to work and the song that was up was "Preamble to the Constitution" (apparently the last time I was listening to it was during a Trivial Pursuit game). But I started to think about things I first knew because of songs - from Hair alone I learned parts of Hamlet and the Gettysburg Address :)
So for the final day of poetry month, here's a poem I first heard set to music by Christy Moore on his marvellous album "Ride On."

Manufactured excitement on a Sunday evening! I'm working late with the AMD on a grant and the fire alarm just went off. At first I thought it was a zone alarm - M has a tendency to exit through alarmed areas without checking first - but it turns out he put the kettle on for tea and forgot about it. The water burned out and the plastic lid melted, setting off the smoke alarm in the green room. By the time we got the alarm shut off and called the alarm company to cancel the alarm (a farce in itself - my cell phone was dead, the green room landline wasn't working and another colleague dialed the wrong number twice), the fire department had already been dispatched. I must say, though, that their response time was very good! But the Production Buyer just happened to be driving by and saw the door open and the fire truck out front, so he came sprinting up wondering what was wrong. I think that's a sign that it's time for me to go.
But first, a poem.

Happy Burns Day! I'm having a midnight snack of oatcakes and cheddar (and maybe a little bit of whiskey), but since I can't share the food, I thought I'd share the 2009 entry into the Burns Day series.
And I just realized it's
deelaundry's birthday as well. I should have realized someone as awesome as her would share a birthday with someone as awesome as Robert Burns. This is for Dee, as well, since she first gave me the idea of writing from Taub's POV.

It doesn’t feel like a year-end unless I follow sheep-like and add my round-up to the list. Fortunately, I did a year-to-date list at the beginning of August, so less than a page of stories to deal with!
Stats:
28 stories (30, if you count “James at…” as three stories)
87,621 words
Mind you, I have roughly 30,000 words written for the next Big Bang Challenge. If I count the first section, which is finished but for the proofing and could stand-alone, I can round that up to 95,000 in my head.

Well, not really, because I've barely skimmed the surface of the shopping, but I'm at least in the mood now.
Got one brochure almost to the print stage today, and if I can finalize it on Monday we'll still have the blueline signed off before Christmas, which was my goal. And we couldn't have gone any earlier, because the sponsor only got us the right logo and message this afternoon. The other one isn't quite as ready, but technically we don't need it until later, so we can probably finish it off after Christmas.
The annual staff party was today with the cut-throat present exchange. As always, the original jewellery was the most fought over item, which took the focus off the gift I wanted - a wind-up flashlight!!! That totally deserves three exclamation marks. And it's waterproof. Wilson's had to have been waterproof.
The annual Workhouse pageant was nearly a flop, since C bailed from the musical portion this morning and then both C and V protested about using the DVD, so I chopped it down to the intro and the song, which was plenty long enough, as it turned out. D was awesome - it helps to have a real actor read the part :) Maybe I'll get ambitious and write a panto in the summer.
Hopefully, now I can concentrate on finishing Big Bang and maybe a quick Christmas story.
